Sysco and US Foods are the two largest foodservice distributors in the United States, together serving over 600,000 restaurants, healthcare facilities, schools, and hospitality businesses. Their pallet requirements reflect the food safety stakes of their supply chain - pallets must be food-grade clean, structurally sound, and compliant with FSMA and HACCP standards.
Stamped kiln-dried pallet lumber, bulk warehouse stock, dimensional yard inventory, raw softwood logs, and sawmill operations - the supply chain behind every custom and standard pallet we ship.

Sysco's Supplier Guidance Manual specifies the following pallet standards:
| Requirement | Sysco Standard |
|---|---|
| Pallet Type | GMA 48x40 wood pallet - new or Grade A recycled from food-safe sources |
| Food Grade | No chemical, pesticide, or hazardous material contact history |
| Structural | No broken boards, split stringers, or protruding fasteners |
| Treatment | ISPM-15 heat treatment required for any imported product |
| Prohibited | MB (methyl bromide) treated pallets absolutely prohibited in food supply chains |
| Max Weight | Per Sysco SKU spec - typically 1,500-2,000 lb for refrigerated items |

| Requirement | US Foods Standard |
|---|---|
| Pallet Size | 48x40 GMA or 48x40 block pallet |
| Condition | Grade A - food contact surfaces clean, no odor contamination |
| Chemical History | Pallets must have no prior chemical, pesticide, or non-food cargo history |
| ISPM-15 | Required for all imported products |
| Plastic Pallets | Accepted for specific programs (cold chain, cleanroom) |
Both Sysco and US Foods explicitly prohibit methyl bromide-treated pallets. MB was once used as a fumigant before ISPM-15 mandated heat treatment for international trade. MB residue poses food safety risks. When sourcing pallets for foodservice supply chains, always verify your supplier sources ISPM-15 HT-marked (not MB-marked) pallets. Florida Pallet Supply supplies only ISPM-15 HT-certified pallets for food-contact applications.

Broadline distributors like Sysco and US Foods run multi-temperature DCs, and the pallet rule changes with the zone. Dry, refrigerated, frozen, and raw-protein areas each carry different sanitation expectations. Use this as a planning reference, then confirm the exact rule for your receiving facility in your supplier packet.
| Temperature zone | Typical pallet rule | Food-safety / sanitation note | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry / ambient | 48x40 GMA Grade A hardwood, block or four-way stringer | ISPM-15 (HT) stamp on imported goods; no mold, odor, or protruding nails | Standard broadline staple storage and racking |
| Refrigerated / cooler (33-41F) | Grade A hardwood or plastic; clean and dry | Damp or contaminated wood grows mold in cold, humid air; some DCs require plastic near open product | Condensation and humidity speed up contamination |
| Frozen (-10 to 0F) | Hygienic plastic or high-grade block wood; no ice-laden pallets | Wood can absorb moisture and splinter when frozen; plastic is preferred where wash-down is required | Brittleness and sanitation at freezer temperatures |
| Fresh produce / floral | Grade A, clean, ventilated stacking, no chemical residue | IPM-compliant with no fumigant residue (methyl bromide is banned) | Ethylene-sensitive, high-turn product |
| Meat / seafood (raw protein) | Plastic or sanitized hygienic block wood; no repair debris | HACCP zones favor non-porous, washable pallets | Cross-contamination risk with raw protein |
General foodservice-DC norms as of July 2026. Sysco and US Foods publish exact requirements per facility; confirm in your supplier packet before shipping.
