Wood vs Plastic Pallets
True Cost Comparison, Durability & When Each Makes Sense

Florida Pallet Supply • Updated 2026-07-23

Plastic pallets are often marketed as the premium alternative to wood - lighter, cleaner, more consistent. But the reality is more nuanced. For most North American operations, wood pallets deliver better economics. For specific applications - closed-loop food processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, export - plastic pallets can be worth the significant price premium.

This guide gives you an honest comparison of wood vs plastic on every dimension that matters for a buying decision.

Where Plastic Pallets Win

Plastic pallets make economic sense in closed-loop systems where every pallet returns to origin (pharmaceutical manufacturing, beverage crate systems, pooling programs like iGPS). They are also superior in wet environments (seafood processing, produce washing, blast freezing) where wood absorbs moisture and harbors bacteria. Plastic pallets are dimensionally consistent to within 1-2mm - critical for automated conveyor and robotic picking systems where wood variability causes jams.

Where Wood Pallets Win

Wood wins on purchase price, repairability, one-way shipping economics, and recycling programs. For any operation where pallets leave the facility and do not return (outbound-only shipping), wood is the only economical choice - you would not pay $100+ for a pallet that ships once. Wood pallets also have established infrastructure: recyclers, repairers, and secondary markets throughout every major US metro area, including all Florida markets.

Which Material Wins by Operating Environment

Cost per pallet is the wrong first question. The material that wins is decided by the environment the pallet lives in, because that is what drives replacement rate, sanitation cost, and rejection risk. Below is the selection matrix we use when quoting mixed operations. Assessed July 2026.

Operating environmentWinsWhyTrade-off you accept
Washdown and direct food contactPlasticNon-porous, pressure-washable, will not absorb liquid or harbor bacteria5x or more purchase price and no repair path
Freezer and cold storagePlasticNo moisture uptake, so no freeze-thaw swelling or ice bonding to the deckSome resins turn brittle at low temperature; confirm the cold-rated grade
International exportWood (heat treated)ISPM-15 heat treatment is a solved, low-cost path and the pallet is expendableYou must hold the HT stamp and the treatment paperwork
Automated storage and conveyor (ASRS)PlasticConsistent dimensions and no loose boards or protruding nails to jam equipmentHighest unit cost; only pays back inside a controlled closed loop
One-way and ecommerce outboundWoodThe pallet is not coming back, so purchase price is effectively the whole costNo residual asset at the destination
Heavy and machinery loadsWood (custom or block)Cheap to over-build with added stringers and thicker deck boards for the exact loadHeavier tare weight and a custom lead time
Retail DC inboundWood (Grade A GMA)Grade A GMA 48x40 is what nearly every retailer scorecard is written againstGrade discipline matters; a Grade B slip risks a chargeback
Pharma and cleanroomPlasticAuditable, particulate-free, and no fumigation or treatment record to maintainCost only justifies inside a tightly controlled closed loop

ⓘ Most operations are mixed. It is normal to run plastic inside a washdown or freezer closed loop and wood on everything outbound. Get a quote for a mixed fleet →

ISPM-15 and Export: An Advantage for Wood

Plastic pallets are exempt from ISPM-15 requirements because they do not carry plant disease risk. This is often cited as a plastic pallet advantage for export. However, heat-treated wood pallets also meet ISPM-15 at a fraction of the plastic pallet cost. The export argument for plastic is less compelling than it appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

Plastic wins in freezer and cold storage. Wood absorbs moisture, and in a freeze-thaw cycle that moisture swells the boards and can bond the pallet to the product or the floor. Plastic takes on no moisture, so it stays dimensionally stable and washes down between cycles. The two conditions to check before you switch: confirm the resin is rated for your low temperature, because some grades turn brittle in deep freeze, and confirm the pallets stay inside a closed loop. At $40 to $200 each versus $8 to $28 for wood, plastic only pays back if the pallet comes home. Most cold-chain operations run plastic inside the freezer loop and heat-treated wood on anything shipping out one way.
In direct-contact applications (fish, meat, produce washing), plastic is preferable because it can be pressure-washed and sanitized without absorbing water. For standard packaged food distribution, Grade A wood pallets are fully compliant with all food safety standards at far lower cost.
Yes, but check capacity ratings carefully. Some plastic pallet designs have lower racking capacity than wood GMA pallets due to the flex characteristics of HDPE. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pallets with metal stringer reinforcement perform best in racking.
Standard plastic pallets with 48x40 or other standard dimensions work with all standard forklifts. Hollow-block plastic pallet designs may have different tine clearance than wood - verify with your supplier before ordering.

Ready to Order Pallets for Your Operation?

Wood pallets and plastic pallets differ in cost, weight, repairability, and application suitability - wood pallets dominate commercial use at 95% of the US market while plastic pallets serve specific closed-loop and sanitation-critical applications. Wood GMA pallets cost $8 to $28 each; equivalent plastic pallets cost $40 to $200 each. Wood pallets can be repaired by replacing individual boards; plastic pallets cannot be cost-effectively repaired once cracked. The primary advantage of plastic pallets is resistance to moisture and ease of sanitization in food and pharmaceutical wash-down environments.
