Pallet Rental Cost vs Purchase 2026: CHEP Cost Analysis

CHEP vs owned GMA: annual cost models, loss rate benchmarks, and hybrid program strategy for mid-market distributors. Florida Pallet Supply delivers new, recycled, custom, and ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets to all 67 Florida counties, with same-day dispatch from its Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami, and Lakeland yards and a 50-pallet minimum order.

Quick answer: CHEP pallet cost is set by contract, not a public price list. Programs are typically billed as an issue fee per trip, transfer fees between accounts, and loss fees for unreturned pallets, which this guide models at about $5 to $9 per trip in total. Buying a Grade A recycled GMA pallet costs about $9 to $15, one time.

Should your operation rent pallets through CHEP, PECO, or another pool program -- or buy GMA pallets outright? This is one of the highest-stakes supply chain decisions a distribution manager makes, and the "right" answer depends entirely on your specific operation: shipping volume, customer mix, loss rates, and retailer requirements. This guide provides the complete cost model for both approaches, with real numbers for operations across Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Maryland, and Delaware.

Option A: Buy GMA Pallets (Owned Program)

You purchase GMA 48x40 pallets outright, use them for outbound shipments, and either retrieve them (closed loop) or absorb the loss (open loop). This is the most common model for mid-market distributors and manufacturers in the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Where these numbers come from (method note, updated 2026-08-01). The three annual models above are worked examples at 10,000 pallet trips per year, and every per-unit figure in them is the model's own arithmetic: divide the annual cost by the trips or pallets in the assumption column and you get the rate. The owned models produce $2.90 per trip for new GMA and $2.00 per trip for recycled Grade A; the CHEP model produces $5.79 per trip all in. An outside source is consistent with that CHEP figure. The trade journal Pallet Enterprise, in its rental-versus-white-wood cost analysis, works from roughly a $5.00 average issue fee and concludes that "a $5.00 issue fee will turn into a $7 to $10 pallet" once transfer charges, non-participating-distributor fees of $8 to $18 and loss fees are added. That is the poorly-retrieved scenario flagged at $12+ per trip below, and it is why retrieval discipline matters more than the headline rate. One honest caveat: pool operators do not publish rate cards. CHEP, PECO and iGPS price per contract, by volume, lane and retention. The issue-fee column in the program comparison table is therefore an estimated range, not a quoted rate, and your negotiated number will differ. The owned-pallet figures are ours and we will quote them.

Option B: CHEP Pallet Rental

CHEP is the world's largest pallet rental pool. You pay per-trip fees rather than purchasing pallets. CHEP handles pallet repair and redistribution through a depot network. Best suited for closed-loop retailer programs where customers participate in CHEP.

At 10,000 trips/year with a 12% loss rate: owned recycled Grade A pallets cost $2.00/trip vs CHEP at $5.79/trip, so CHEP is 190% more expensive per trip for a typical open-loop distribution operation. The gap narrows significantly for high-return-rate closed-loop programs.

Building a Hybrid Pallet Program

Most mid-market operations are best served by a hybrid model: CHEP for retailer-required shipments, owned GMA for everything else. This avoids paying CHEP rates across your entire volume while maintaining compliance with key retailer programs.

Segment Your Shipments

Map every customer account to either "CHEP required" or "CHEP not required." CHEP is mandatory for Walmart, Kroger, Target, and a few other chains. Every other customer can receive owned GMA pallets without penalty.

Track Your Loss Rate Accurately

Most operations overestimate their pallet loss rate when mental modeling and underestimate it when running the numbers. Install a simple entry/exit count system -- even a spreadsheet -- before making a rental vs. purchase decision.

Negotiate Volume Pricing

Florida Pallet Supply offers volume pricing tiers starting at 100, 500, and 1,000 pallet orders. Lock in quarterly standing orders to get the best per-pallet pricing and guaranteed availability -- which matters in tight supply markets.

Consider Grade A Recycled for Non-Display Lanes

Not all shipments require new pallets. Internal warehouse moves, non-retailer customers, and food manufacturing inbound can all use Grade A recycled at $9-13 per pallet vs $18-26 for new. Match the pallet grade to the actual use case.

How Much Is a CHEP Pallet Worth?

To you, a CHEP pallet has no resale value, because you never own it. CHEP pallets are painted blue, marked as CHEP property, and stay part of the CHEP pool no matter whose dock they end up on. Pallet recyclers should not buy them, and selling or keeping them as owned inventory breaks the rental agreement. What CHEP pallets do have is a replacement cost: if pallets in your account are lost or not returned, your contract charges a lost pallet fee for each one. The same rule applies to red PECO pallets and gray plastic iGPS pallets.

CHEP Pallet Rental Cost Per Day and Per Trip

Rental programs charge for the time and the movements a pallet spends in your account, not just for the pallet. Depending on the contract, that can include a daily or period hire charge while pallets sit in your control, an issue fee when pallets are sent to you, transfer fees when they move to a customer account, and loss fees at reconciliation. Pallets that sit idle in a yard keep costing money, which is why slow-moving inventory raises the true cost per trip. Ask your rental provider for the exact fee schedule in your agreement.

How the daily hire charge is calculated

Where a contract includes a daily hire charge, weekly rent is pallet balance x days x daily hire rate. Each pallet held for one day is one product day, so the bill tracks how many pallets sit in your account, not how many you ship. The worked example below comes from Pallet Enterprise, whose 2009 user education columns were written by a former CHEP employee.

Weekly Hire Charge: Worked Example

ScenarioPallet balanceDaysProduct daysDaily hireWeekly rent
Buffer left on the yard over the weekend94076,580$0.03$197.40
Buffer cut by Saturday close30072,100$0.03$63.00
Same 300 buffer, rate negotiated down30072,100$0.025$52.50
Original 940 buffer at the lower rate94076,580$0.025$164.50

Source: formula, balances and the $0.03 and $0.025 rates from Pallet Enterprise, "Red, White & Blue: A Cost Analysis of Rental vs. White Wood Pallets" and "Negotiating the Pitfalls of Rental Pallet Contracts" (2009). These rates illustrate the method and are not a current CHEP price; the same columns put the average daily hire at $0.035 and note that not every contract includes it. Weekly totals computed by Florida Pallet Supply, October 16, 2026.

Held every week of the year, the 940-pallet buffer costs $10,264.80 in hire alone and the 300-pallet buffer costs $3,276.00, a difference of $6,988.80 before any issue, transfer or loss fee. That is why the columns advise getting the balance as low as you can by close of business on Saturday, the end of the CHEP invoice week they describe, and booking a Monday delivery so the line does not run short. The two columns describe the invoice week in opposite order, so confirm the billing period in your own agreement.

Owned pallets have no daily charge and no reconciliation. If you are weighing a switch, Florida Pallet Supply can supply owned GMA pallets in 100, 500 and 2,000 pallet tiers alongside an existing CHEP program, with same-day dispatch from Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Miami and Lakeland. Frequently Asked Questions

The answer depends entirely on how many loads you ship per year and whether your customers return pallets. For high-volume shippers (10,000+ pallets/year) with closed-loop supply chains, CHEP or PECO rental programs often cost less than purchase + loss + disposal. For open-loop or one-way shippers -- which is most of the market -- buying GMA recycled pallets and absorbing losses is typically 20-40% cheaper than pallet rental. Crunch the numbers with your actual loss rate before committing to a rental program.

CHEP pallet rental pricing in 2026 is typically structured as: issue fee ($3.00 to $4.00 per trip), transfer fee ($1.00 to $1.50 per move between CHEP accounts), and lost pallet fee ($21-28 per unreturned pallet). Total cost per pallet trip commonly ranges from $5.00 to $9.00 for well-managed programs. Programs with poor pallet retrieval rates can cost $12+ per trip when lost pallet fees are factored in. CHEP pricing varies by contract volume and negotiated rates.

Yes, but you must segregate them clearly. CHEP pallets (blue) remain CHEP property and must be returned through the CHEP depot network. Using CHEP pallets as owned inventory is a contract violation. Most operations use CHEP for retailer-required programs (Walmart, Kroger, Target) and owned GMA pallets for everything else. Florida Pallet Supply can supply owned GMA pallets to complement your existing CHEP program without conflict.

Pallet pools are third-party programs where pallets are owned by the pool operator (CHEP, PECO, iGPS) and rented to shippers on a per-trip basis. The pool operator handles cleaning, repair, and redistribution through a depot network. Participants pay issue, transfer, and lost pallet fees. CHEP is the largest pool with blue plastic-look wood pallets; PECO uses red pallets; iGPS uses plastic pallets. Pools are most cost-effective when your customers are enrolled in the same program.

Industry benchmark pallet loss rates range from 8-15% per year for typical open-loop distribution operations. High-performing closed-loop operations achieve 3-5% loss rates. Retail distribution to big-box stores (Walmart, Target) tends to have better return rates because those retailers have pallet return programs. Direct-to-consumer and restaurant/foodservice distribution typically has higher loss rates (15-25%) because pallets are not returned. Budget conservatively at 12% annual loss when modeling owned pallet program costs.

CHEP sets pricing by contract, so there is no single public rate. Programs typically combine an issue fee per trip, transfer fees when pallets move between accounts, and a lost pallet fee for each pallet that is not returned. This guide models a well-managed program at about $5 to $9 per pallet trip in total, with poorly controlled programs costing more once loss fees are counted.

If you are not CHEP, a CHEP pallet is worth nothing to sell, because it remains CHEP property. Pallet buyers and recyclers should not purchase blue CHEP pallets, and keeping them as owned stock breaks the rental agreement. The only value attached to them for a renter is the lost pallet fee charged when one goes missing from your account.

Where a contract includes a daily hire charge, weekly rent is pallet balance x days x daily rate. In a worked example from Pallet Enterprise, 940 pallets held for 7 days is 6,580 product days, about $197 a week at $0.03 per pallet per day; cutting the balance to 300 pallets drops it to $63. Those rates illustrate the method and are not a current price, and not every agreement includes daily hire. Ask your provider for the fee schedule and compare it with the one-time cost of buying owned GMA pallets.
