Florida Pallet Supply • Updated October 14, 2026
A pooled 48x40 block pallet from CHEP or PECO is 48 x 40 inches and 141 mm tall (PECO lists it as 5.56 in), and both companies rate it at 2,800 lb. The iGPS plastic pallet is 48 x 40 x 5.62 inches, weighs about 50 lb and is rated 5,000 lb dynamic, 30,000 lb static and 2,800 lb in a rack. A Euro EPAL 1 is 1200 x 800 x 144 mm, weighs about 25 kg and carries a 1,500 kg safe working load. Neither CHEP nor PECO publishes the empty weight of its full-size 48x40 pallet, which is why so many weight figures online disagree.
This page collects the specifications each maker actually publishes, side by side, with a link to the source for every row. Where a maker does not publish a number we say so instead of guessing. Figures were reviewed on October 14, 2026. For the construction details behind the 48x40 grocery standard itself, see our GMA pallet standard guide.

Three things stand out. First, the two big wood pools publish the same footprint, the same 141 mm height and the same 2,800 lb rating, so on paper a CHEP and a PECO 48x40 match on every figure either company publishes. Second, the weight column is mostly empty for wood: PECO gives a weight only for its 48x20 half pallet (28 lb), and CHEP gives none on its US product page. Third, "48x40 plastic pallet" is not one product. The six plastic pallets above run from 11.5 lb to 54 lb, a 4.7 to 1 spread.
Euro pallets are a different footprint. An EPAL 1 deck covers 78% of the area of a 48x40, so a load built for one will not sit correctly on the other. If you receive imported freight on Euro pallets or ship to Europe, these are the published EPAL figures. Our metric pallet guide covers when US buyers run into them.
| Pallet | Dimensions | Empty weight | Safe working load | Max load on bottom pallet when stacked | Construction | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| EPAL 1 Euro pallet | 1200 x 800 x 144 mm (47.2 x 31.5 x 5.67 in) | About 25 kg (55 lb) | 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) | 5,500 kg (12,125 lb) | 11 boards, 78 nails | EPAL |
| EPAL 2 pallet | 1200 x 1000 x 162 mm (47.2 x 39.4 x 6.38 in) | About 35 kg (77 lb) | 1,250 kg (2,756 lb) | 4,250 kg (9,370 lb) | 17 boards, 133 nails | EPAL |
| EPAL 3 pallet | 1200 x 1000 x 144 mm (47.2 x 39.4 x 5.67 in) | About 30 kg (66 lb) | 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) | 4,500 kg (9,921 lb) | 13 boards, 84 nails | EPAL |
| EPAL 6 half pallet | 800 x 600 x 144 mm (31.5 x 23.6 x 5.67 in) | About 9.5 kg (21 lb) | 750 kg (1,653 lb) | 1,500 kg (3,307 lb) | 13 boards, 69 nails | EPAL |
Note how EPAL states its rating: a safe working load per pallet plus a separate limit for the bottom pallet when loaded pallets are stacked on a solid, even floor. For the EPAL 1 that is 1,500 kg (about 3,307 lb) on the pallet and 5,500 kg (about 12,125 lb) on the bottom pallet of a stack. US pool operators express the same idea differently, as a rated load plus a stacking limit, as CHEP does with its 5 unit loads and 10,000 lb ceiling.
| Plastic 48x40 pallet | Empty weight | Dynamic rating | Static rating | Rack rated | Dynamic lb per lb of pallet |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lightweight nestable plastic 48x40 (Nelson PG-4840-N-107US) | 11.5 lb | 2,100 lb | 3,300 lb | Not rated | 183 |
| Nestable plastic 48x40 (Nelson TE-4840-N-TDC4) | 21 lb | 2,500 lb | 6,500 lb | Not rated | 119 |
| Rackless plastic 48x40 (Nelson NPP-4840-3R) | 33.5 lb | 4,000 lb | 20,000 lb | Not rated | 119 |
| iGPS plastic pallet, Gen 1 | 48.5 lb | 5,000 lb | 30,000 lb | Yes, 2,800 lb | 103 |
| iGPS plastic pallet, Gen 6 | 50 lb | 5,000 lb | 30,000 lb | Yes, 2,800 lb | 100 |
| iGPS plastic pallet, Gen 3 | 50 to 54 lb (52 midpoint) | 5,000 lb | 30,000 lb | Yes, 2,800 lb | 96 |
The lightest pallet here is rated 2,100 lb dynamic and the heaviest 5,000 lb. Weight buys capacity, but not in a straight line: per pound of pallet, the lightweight nestable models carry more on the forks than the heavy pooled pallet, while only the iGPS pallets in this set publish a rack rating at all. Every one of the purchase models is marked not rated for racking on its sheet. If a plastic pallet will sit in selective rack, the rack rating is the number to ask for, and "not rated" means do not rack it.
iGPS defines them in the notes to its spec sheet. Static is compression strength with the pallet sitting on a level floor under a uniformly distributed load, the case that matters when loaded pallets are stacked. Dynamic is the load carried on the forks. Rack is the load with the pallet spanning two supports, which iGPS specifies as at least 2 inches wide along each long side. All three assume an evenly spread load at about 70 F; concentrated loads and heat lower the real capacity. Our load capacity guide goes deeper on how each rating is tested.
| Pallet | Height (in) | Height (mm) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| PECO 48x40 / 48x20 block | 5.56 | 141 | PECO Pallet |
| CHEP 48x40 block (141 mm) | 5.55 | 141 | CHEP USA |
| iGPS plastic, all generations | 5.62 | 143 | iGPS |
| EPAL 1, EPAL 3, EPAL 6 (144 mm) | 5.67 | 144 | EPAL |
| EPAL 2 (162 mm) | 6.38 | 162 | EPAL |
| Nestable plastic TE-4840 (unnested) | 6.40 | 163 | Nelson Company spec sheet TE-4840-N-TDC4 |
Heights cluster tightly between 5.1 and 5.67 inches for most pallets, with the EPAL 2 at 6.38 inches and the nestable plastic sheet at 6.4 inches. Small differences add up in a stack. CHEP says empty blue pallets can be stacked 19 high in a trailer for 570 pallets, which is 30 stacks; at 141 mm each, a 19-high stack of block pallets stands about 105 inches. When a rack bay or dock plate clearance is tight, measure the pallet you actually receive rather than assuming every 48x40 is the same height.
Because CHEP and PECO do not publish a 48x40 weight, the reliable way to get one is to weigh it. Put ten empty pallets from your own inbound stream on a calibrated floor scale, divide by ten, and repeat in a wet month and a dry month. Wood pallets gain and lose water with the weather, which matters in Florida humidity, so a single reading in one season can mislead a freight or ergonomics calculation. Plastic pallets vary far less with weather, and their makers publish weights, so the sheet value is usually close enough.
CHEP, PECO and iGPS run their pallets as pools: you rent them, ship on them, and the pool collects and repairs them. You get the published spec without owning the asset. Wood pallets you buy outright, whether a stringer GMA style pallet or a new block pallet, are built to whatever specification you order, which is why their weight and rating depend on lumber species, board count and fasteners rather than on a pool sheet. Our rental versus purchase cost analysis compares the two on cost, and the two-way versus four-way guide covers stringer versus block entry. If you need a purchase pallet built to a stated spec, send us the dimensions, rating and entry type and we will quote it.
PECO does not publish the empty weight of its 48x40 block pallet. Its specification page lists the 48x40 at 48.00 x 40.00 x 5.56 inches with a 2,800 lb rating, 26 boards and 138 fasteners, but gives a weight only for the 48x20 half pallet, which is 28 lb (12.7 kg). Any single number you see quoted for the full-size PECO pallet is an estimate, and wood weight moves with moisture content, so weigh a sample if your freight or ergonomic plan depends on it.
CHEP's US product page for its pooled 48x40 wood block pallet does not state an empty weight. It does publish the size, 1219 x 1016 x 141 mm, a 2,800 lb rating for a uniformly distributed load, and a stacking limit of 5 unit loads high, not to exceed 10,000 lb. If you need an exact tare weight for a scale ticket or a freight calculation, weigh several pallets from your own inbound stock and use the average.
The standard US grocery pallet is 48 inches long by 40 inches wide. PECO lists its pooled block pallets at 5.56 inches (141 mm) tall and CHEP lists 141 mm, and the iGPS plastic pallet is 5.62 inches tall. Height is the dimension that varies most between makers, so confirm it whenever rack beam clearance, conveyor transfers or trailer cube are tight. A 48x40 footprint alone does not make a pallet GMA style; construction and entry type matter too.
It depends heavily on the model. Among six 48x40 plastic pallets with published specs, dynamic ratings run from 2,100 lb for an 11.5 lb nestable pallet to 5,000 lb for the iGPS pooled pallet, and static ratings from 3,300 lb to 30,000 lb. Only the iGPS pallets in this set carry a racking rating, 2,800 lb with at least 2 inches of support on both rails. Check the specific spec sheet before racking or stacking any plastic pallet.
The EPAL 1 Euro pallet measures 1200 x 800 x 144 mm and weighs about 25 kg, roughly 55 lb. The European Pallet Association gives it a safe working load of 1,500 kg, about 3,307 lb, and says the bottom pallet in a stack of loaded pallets on a solid, even floor must not carry more than 5,500 kg. The EPAL 6 half pallet, 800 x 600 mm, weighs about 9.5 kg and is rated at 750 kg.
