Florida Pallet Supply • Updated October 2026
Walmart pallet color and weight differences, in short: blue pallets are CHEP pooled (rented) pallets, red pallets are PECO pooled pallets, and unpainted wood pallets are whitewood GMA-style pallets you buy outright. Color tells you who owns the pallet, not its strength. CHEP and PECO both publish a 2,800 lb rating for their 48x40 block pallets, and Walmart's inbound spec is 48x40 in Grade A condition whatever the color. See the color comparison.
Walmart is the largest private employer in the United States and its distribution network processes billions of pallet-loads annually. For suppliers shipping to Walmart DCs, pallet compliance isn't optional - non-compliant pallets are rejected at the dock, re-palletized at your expense, and flagged in Retail Link. Understanding exactly what Walmart requires saves money and supplier relationship points.
This guide covers Walmart's 2026 pallet specifications, what Walmart actually enforces in practice, and how Florida Pallet Supply's Grade A GMA pallets ensure compliance at Walmart DCs across the Southeast.
Stamped kiln-dried pallet lumber, bulk warehouse stock, dimensional yard inventory, raw softwood logs, and sawmill operations - the supply chain behind every custom and standard pallet we ship.

Walmart's Supplier Standards for pallets are published in the Walmart Supplier Manual. The key requirements:
| Requirement | Walmart Standard | FL Pallet Supply Grade A |

Walmart requires suppliers to deliver product on GMA-standard 48x40 inch wood pallets in Grade A condition with no broken boards, protruding nails, or structural damage. Walmart's pallet compliance program enforces these standards at receiving docks across all distribution centers and store backrooms. Non-compliant pallets result in chargebacks, rejected shipments, and potential supplier scorecard penalties. Suppliers must use heat-treated ISPM-15 pallets for any international Walmart shipments.
Get Compliance Quote →Sam's Club (owned by Walmart) follows the same 48x40 GMA spec for inbound supplier shipments. Sam's Club suppliers shipping club-pack quantities typically need pallets that can hold 2,000-2,500 lb of product per pallet given the denser club packs. Grade A GMA pallets meet this requirement. Sam's Club DCs in Florida include Laurel Hill and the Tampa Bay metro area.
Below is the hard-spec version of what Walmart expects on an inbound pallet, the reason each rule exists, and the tolerance suppliers actually get in practice. Selling grocery or GFSI-audited product? These specs pair with the scorecard penalties in our Walmart OTIF and SQEP pallet compliance guide, which covers how a bad pallet turns into an On-Time-In-Full or SQEP defect.
| Requirement | Walmart spec | Why it matters | Tolerance / note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Footprint | 48 in x 40 in GMA | Sized to Walmart racking, conveyors, and AS/RS handling | Non-standard sizes need buyer approval first |
| Pallet type | Block or four-way stringer, GMA Grade A (#1) | Four-way entry for forklift and automated handling | Grade B or single-use not accepted for inbound |
| Material | New or Grade A recycled hardwood | Holds structural integrity through the full network | CHEP / pooled blue accepted (pool fees apply) |
| Dynamic load capacity | 2,800 lb or greater | Safe movement of full unit loads | Match the pallet rating to your product weight |
| Load height (incl. pallet) | Commonly 60 in grocery / up to 72 in general merchandise | Rack-bay and conveyor clearance | Confirm the number for each DC in Retail Link |
| Overhang | Zero (no product past the pallet edge) | Prevents load damage and conveyor jams | Even a half inch can trigger a rejection |
| Bottom deck | Full four-way with unbroken lead boards | Required for conveyor and automated handling | Missing lead boards is an automatic reject |
| Heat treatment | ISPM-15 (HT) stamp on pallets carrying imported product | Phytosanitary compliance at the border | Domestic dry freight does not require HT |
| Labeling | Readable GS1-128 SSCC pallet label | Scanned at DC receiving | Missing or unscannable label is an SQEP defect |
Based on Walmart supplier guidance and GMA norms as of July 2026. Some values vary by facility and program; confirm the current numbers in Retail Link and your supplier agreement before shipping.
Walmart DCs receive pallets in three colors, and the color is a pooling signal rather than a separate Walmart grade. The table below uses only figures the pallet companies publish themselves.
| Color | What it is | Ownership | Published 48x40 rating | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blue | CHEP pooled wood block pallet, true 4-way entry | Rented from the CHEP pool (pool fees apply) | 2,800 lb in normal operation | chep.com; CHEP 48x40 spec sheet |
| Red | PECO pooled block-class pallet, full 4-way, 48.00 x 40.00 x 5.56 in | Remains the property of PECO | 2,800 lb | pecopallet.com; PECO specifications |
| Unpainted (white) wood | Whitewood GMA-style 48x40 stringer or block pallet | Bought outright; you keep, reuse or resell it | Built to spec; Walmart asks for 2,800 lb dynamic | Walmart spec tables on this page |
Color does not set the weight. Weight comes from construction (block pallets carry more wood than most stringer pallets), wood species and moisture content. Neither CHEP nor PECO lists a tare weight for its 48x40 pallet on its spec page: CHEP's sheet lists kiln-dried Southern Yellow Pine construction, and PECO publishes a weight (28 lb) only for its 48x20 half pallet. If freight weight matters, weigh a few pallets from your own supply. For the buy-versus-rent trade-off, see our CHEP alternative guide and PECO alternative guide.
Walmart's inbound spec on this page is a 48x40 GMA pallet in Grade A condition with four-way entry and a 2,800 lb dynamic rating. A compressed (pressed or molded) wood pallet is not a GMA-grade wood pallet, so treat it like any non-standard pallet: get written approval from your Walmart buyer before you ship on one. The safe default is a GMA 48x40 pallet in Grade A condition.
No. The grades suppliers use for 48x40 GMA-style pallets are Grade A (also called #1) and Grade B (#2), plus economy Grade C. There is no recognized half-number grade such as #1.5, so if a vendor quotes one, ask for its written definition. For Walmart, only Grade A is safe. Our pallet grades guide explains each grade, and you can request a Grade A quote.
Walmart requires a 48 in x 40 in GMA pallet in Grade A (#1) condition: block or four-way stringer construction, 2,800 lb or greater dynamic load capacity, unbroken four-way bottom deck, zero product overhang, and a readable GS1-128 SSCC label. Pallets carrying imported product also need an ISPM-15 (HT) stamp. Load height runs about 60 inches for grocery and up to 72 inches for general merchandise, but confirm the exact figure for your receiving DC in Retail Link.
Walmart's primary inbound pallet requirement is the GMA 48x40 pallet meeting GMA Grade A standards: 2,800 lb dynamic load capacity, no broken boards, no protruding nails, and four-way forklift entry capability. Walmart accepts both stringer and block-style GMA pallets. CHEP blue pallets are accepted but not required - GMA-spec white pallets in Grade A condition meet the standard at most Walmart DCs.
Walmart does not require new pallets for most supplier shipments. Grade A recycled GMA 48x40 pallets meet Walmart's pallet specification provided they meet structural and condition requirements: no broken boards, no missing boards, no protruding nails or staples, capable of supporting 2,800 lb dynamic load, and four-way entry. New pallets are only required for certain food-direct categories where contamination risk is specified by the buyer.
Grade B pallets are generally not accepted for Walmart inbound shipments. Walmart's GMA spec requires Grade A condition. Grade B pallets, which may have repaired boards or minor structural repairs, are typically rejected at Walmart DC receiving docks. Always use Grade A or better for Walmart supplier compliance.
Pallet rejection at a Walmart DC receiving dock results in the shipment being refused or re-palletized at the supplier's expense. Some DCs will re-pallet onto their own CHEP pool and charge the supplier for the cost. Repeated pallet violations can result in a chargeback and a compliance flag on the supplier account. Florida Pallet Supply guarantees Grade A GMA pallets - if a pallet fails inspection, we replace it.
Walmart's standard inbound pallet is 48 inches x 40 inches (GMA standard). Non-standard sizes are not accepted without buyer approval. Walmart uses 48x40 GMA pallets for both its Walmart stores and Sam's Club supply chain.
Blue pallets belong to the CHEP pool, red pallets belong to the PECO pool, and unpainted wood pallets are whitewood GMA-style pallets that the shipper owns. Pooled pallets are rented and stay the property of the pool company, while white pallets are bought outright. Walmart's inbound requirement is about the 48x40 footprint and Grade A condition rather than color, and CHEP pallets are accepted but not required.
The color does not determine weight. Construction type, wood species and moisture do. CHEP and PECO both rate their 48x40 block pallets at 2,800 lb, but neither lists a 48x40 tare weight on its spec page; PECO only publishes 28 lb for its 48x20 half pallet. Block pallets generally use more wood than stringer pallets. If freight weight matters, weigh a sample of the pallets you actually ship on.
Walmart's inbound standard is a 48x40 GMA pallet in Grade A condition with four-way entry and a 2,800 lb dynamic rating. A compressed or molded wood pallet is not a GMA-grade wood pallet, so treat it as non-standard and get written approval from your Walmart buyer before shipping on one. Without that approval, a Grade A GMA 48x40 pallet is the safe choice.
No. Suppliers grade GMA-style 48x40 pallets as Grade A (#1), Grade B (#2) and economy Grade C. There is no recognized half-number grade such as #1.5. If a vendor uses an in-between label, ask for its written definition before you buy. For Walmart inbound loads, use Grade A only, because Grade B pallets are typically rejected at DC receiving docks.
It depends on construction. Block pallets, including CHEP and PECO 48x40 pallets, are full four-way, so both forklifts and pallet jacks can enter from every side. Notched stringer pallets let forklift tines in from all four sides, but a pallet jack can only enter from the two open ends. If the receiving DC moves your loads with pallet jacks, a block pallet avoids handling problems.
